Project Cheetah India
What is Project Cheetah
Project Cheetah is an innovative initiative dedicated to the promotion and development of cheetahs. Under this, Cheetah is to be re-established in Indian forests. For this, cheetahs are being brought from Africa to India. Namibia has agreed to send 50 cheetahs to India over the next five years.
About 70 years ago, India was declared cheetah-free. It has become extinct in India.
Cheetah can be seen in the cave paintings of Neolithic period, magazines written during the Mughal and British era, long before written history. But at present Cheetah is not in Indian forests.
Growing human populations, hunting and unrestricted hunting by royals gradually pushed the fastest animal on Earth closer to extinction. The Chita was finally declared extinct from India in 1952. Chita can see speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour within seconds.
